My blog deals with what captures my interest: the Christian life in general, the joys and ironies inherent in the church, the relationship of church and culture, books and movies and articles, ecumenism, and related topics. On occasion I follow up on sermons, share prayers, or reflect on a passage of scripture. I like to "think out loud," hear what others have to say, and learn from the experience.

Banning Gossip
By Mike Smith on 3/6/2008

The March 10 edition of Newsweek featured an article about a Chicgo firm that banned gossip. Sam Chapman, CEO of Empower Public Relations, credits the policy with doubling the company's buisness. According to Chapman, the policy has helped employees focus on work and communicate better with one another.

Here's how it works. First, all the employee ...

The New Baptist Covenant: What's Next?
By Mike Smith on 2/5/2008

The New Baptist Covenant gathering in Atlanta exceeded all my expectations, and I hope it marks the beginning of a new day for Baptists in North America.

I confess I drove to Atlanta in "observer mode." My inner cynic was alive and well. Something unexpected happened. Starting with the first worship service and continuing until the final benediction, I was swept off my feet, drawn into the exper ...

Dog Tales
By Mike Smith on 1/23/2008

Well over a year ago, my wife and I inherited a black Labrador retriever from our daughter, when she married a fine young man who lived in Fairbanks, Alaska. They married on December 28. According to my daughter, the airlines had a policy against flying animals to Alaska at that time of year--something about it being too cold in the hold. "Don't worry," she told us. "We'll fly the dog to Fairbanks next spring."

Should a Pastor Invest Time in Hospital Visitation?
By Mike Smith on 12/27/2007

Most  pastors spend a great deal of time with hospitalized persons. It's part of our calling (not to mention our position description). Nowadays, some pastoral leadership models argue pastors ought not to spend time on hospital visits. Instead, pastors should invest themselves in promoting the church's vision and preaching.

I disagree.

Incarnation
By Mike Smith on 12/20/2007

Incarnation--that's the theological term we use to describe what happened when "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us."

Expository, topical, narrative, and other forms of sermons will be preached this week as clergy attempt to communicate a least a bit of the Incarnation's significance in twenty to thirty minu ...

Creeds, Covenants and Community
By Mike Smith on 11/12/2007

Creeds developed early in the history of the church. "Jesus is Lord" may well have been the earliest one. The Apostle's Creed came later, followed by a number of creeds developed and approved by church councils. Most early Protestants continued to generate creeds.

Creeds sought to accomplish several goals. They gave formal expression to the beliefs of those in power in the church. Most creeds al ...

Suggested Personal Guidelines for the Political "Crazy Season"
By Mike Smith on 9/25/2007

What's a Christian to do during the political "crazy season" (i.e. the race for the presidency of the United State)? When asked, I usually answer in terms of what a Christian should and should not do.

My personal list of "should nots" goes as follows.

First, ...

Intentional Christianity
By Mike Smith on 8/29/2007

This past Sunday morning I spent some time with one of our adult Sunday School classes. They had spent several months working through a study of doctrines important to Baptists, and I had been asked to visit and wrap up the study. After some thought, I decided to talk about why I choose to remain a Baptist Christian.

The topic is important to me. I have a number of friends who have left Baptist ranks to m ...

Harry Potter
By Mike Smith on 8/13/2007

Many of us have read each volume of the Harry Potter series. While I've never lined up at the bookstore to snatch up a copy at midnight, I've throughly enjoyed the books.

For one thing, they are well written. Rowling knows how to tell a story. I especially enjoy her willingness to allow her characters (both young and adult) to grow, sometimes in surprising ways. Rowling creates characters we come to care ...

A New Book Worth Buying
By Mike Smith on 7/20/2007

Recently I began working my way through a book entitled Ancient Christian Devotional. The book provides a year's worth of scripture readings in combination with selected comments from the church fathers. Thanks to excellent work on the part the editors, Thomas Oden and Cindy Crosby, some of the wisest insights from the church fathers are now readily available.

For example, in a commen ...
