Once again Tony Campolo has gotten to the heart of what it means to live as a Christian. His latest book Letters to a Young Evangelical ought to be required reading for Christians of all ages (not to mention a model of effective, engaging writing for would-be authors!). All of the chapters deserve careful reading. Personally, I found those on how history might end, transcending partisan politics, women and the church and a Christian work ethic most helpful.

Most readers will appreciate how Campolo connects his treatment of biblical, historical and theological materials to daily life. For example, he provides five questions Christians ought to ask themselves as they make vocational decisions.

Will this vocation enable me to best serve others as Christ would have me serve them?

Will this vocation enable me to utilize the talents God has given me and actualize my potential as a creative person made in the image of the Ultimate Creator?

Will this vocation provide me with emotional gratification, without which I will lack the energy to love others?

Is this work environmentally responsible? Will I be contributing to the well-being of the planet?

Will my work allow me to build community with co-workers, and will I be able to create a workplace in which love and justice can flourish?

If you are looking for a brief, readable book to help you sort through what it means to be a Christian, current issues and challenges facing the Christian community, and practical ways to move ahead in your walk with Christ Letters to a Young Evangelical  is for you.
