John 1:6-9

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

-John 1:6-9

Scripture tells us John came as a witness to the Light—Jesus Christ. His mission was clear: to prepare the way and point others to the One who was greater. Though related to Jesus, John’s testimony was not based on family ties or personal ambition. It was rooted in divine calling.

John declared, “After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” Later, when his followers worried that people were going to Jesus instead of him, John responded with humility: “I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him. The bride belongs to the bridegroom… That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater; I must become less.”

John understood his role. He was not the Light—only a witness to it. His joy came from hearing the bridegroom’s voice and seeing the Light shine into the world.

Like John, we are called to be witnesses. Our purpose is not to draw attention to ourselves but to reflect Christ’s love and truth. The Light has come, and darkness cannot overcome it. Let us live so that others see the light in us.

Prayer:

Lord, help us to live as true witnesses to Your light. Teach us humility that we may point others to You and not ourselves. May Your presence shine through us today, bringing hope and joy to those around us. Amen.
